Define: In your own words, what is a meme?

Answer the following questions:
1} What qualities must a successful meme (i.e., repeatedly shared) have? Why does something go viral on the Internet? Must a meme have words? Must it be from a
photograph?

TO DO:
2} Find two memes that you like, that you have shared on social media, or find otherwise meaningful. Please post both in your BLOG with the answers to the below questions. Please be sure that the content and images are appropriate and respectful.

ALSO Answer the following: (pertaining to the two memes you chose to analyze)
3} Why do you find this significant? Why do you like it? Why do you think it works?

Next class, you will upload photos from your own electronic device that you already took & chose to use. Come to class prepared on December 6 day 7

PART TWO: work in class - can start March 25, due end of period April 29
Creation of your own meme.
Use 6 photos that you took.

Save each photo with a different name. Each time you change something and like it, save it under a different name (e.g. I do V2, V3, etc for different versions.

Make sure all the photos are the same size (height and width by pixels). You can crop them to a square, that is often easiest.  300 x 300 is a nice size to see easily.

Use at least 3 different filters in your photo editor.

Create a new file which is two times the height and three times the width of your individual photos. Example: 600 high  x 900 wide if the photos were sized to 300 pixels square - the 900 pixel width will fill up the width of a browser window)
plunk in your photo into a new layer each time. Title the layer. You can move the image by using the free transform command. You can only work in the layer you are on- if you are not sure what layer you are on, in photoshop you can use the little eye and check it (tool bar on the right) If the eye is gone, you cannot see the layer. thant is not the same as deleting, it is simply hiding it till you click the "eye" back on again.

For each photo and for the text create a new layer; therefor your meme should have 7 layers. When you are done you can compress it as a jpeg. The layers will stay workable and movable as long as you save it as a working document (in Photoshop, this is the extension .psd)

Add words. They should be on the last layer you do, so that they appear at the top and not behind the photos. They can be anywhere in front of the photos. Use a font and a colour that the viewer can read.  You may use CANVA to add the text, or you can use your photo editor. Play with the size, colour, and type of font to choose what works best.

MY EXAMPLE:
I used the same 2 photos 3 times each for this example, but yours will use 6 different photos. Remember: the whole point is to play and learn how to use filters & tools in photo editing software whether photoshop, krita, gimp, or other.  If you use snap-chat or instagram (or any ready-made photo app program)  you are not taking advantage of the opportunity to learn how to use what the professionals in the industry use. BTW, I will know if you use an on-line meme generator.  Please do the work in class, these are great tools to learn how to use!

Photo 1: Ella the dog
Photo 2: Ella with an artistic filer applied to the entire image.
Photo 3: Ella with another filter.

 Photo 4, Chilli no filter

Photo 5: Chilli with adjustments made using the tools

Photo 6:  is Photo #5 Chilli with adjustments made using the tools& cut-out filter.

Putting it all together (yes I know it is lame and not really a meme, it's just to show you the steps!)

Rebel, no filter, words only added

How to make your BLOG

Make sure that your blog is functioning by the end of the day.  To verify, ask a friend to look at it on their device with the address you have chosen. If they cannot see it, you have either made it private, have not published it, or have the wrong URL entered. Send the link to your blog to glickman@avh.montreal.qc.ca 1) To create your blog, go into your google account. If you do not have one, set one up with a gmail account. Then click on the icon of little squares on the top of your page. There is a drop down menu. If you do not see the orange and white B for blogger symbol, click on “more”, and you will see it. 2) Choose the link « new blog ». Choose a title, which can be long and have special symbols if you'd like (for example, I chose NSA Media). The address and title can be different. The address cannot have any special characters or symbols. I suggest you keep it short and sweet. There is an arrow at the right that will tell you if the address you...
